When little Lucius was born on the meaningful date of June 6th, 1966, nobody expected him to be anything other than a normal little boy. His childhood, spent in a luxurious manor, was as normal as every kid's young years - well, except for the extreme wealth of his parents, as Lucius grew up with everything he desired, including several maids, the family's own butcher and Lucius' private teacher.
Everything changed, though, when Lucius turned 6: His real father, the Devil, appeared in his dreams the night before his birthday, revealing that Lucius was his son.
The Beast managed through Lucius to bring a descendant back to the earth - and so it is Lucius' task now to accomplish the missions of the Evil, which is gaining control over the world. Firstly, Lucius needs to get rid of all his family members and the service staff in the manor to be able to make their wealth and powers his.
Equipped with supernatural powers, Lucius starts off to a blood-flooding tour of horror through his house, using hell's powers of telekinesis and mind control to orchestrate deadly accidents that will minimize the population of the manor one by one by one...
We caught up with Johannes Aikio, the Lead Game Designer for Lucius at Shiver
Games, to talk about this demonic video game!
Horror News Network: How did you guys come up with the concept for this game?
Johannes Aikio: We're all very big fans of both classic horror movies and adventure games,
and we all always wanted to play a horror movie - but on the dark, evil
side. I mean, we all know how it feels to watch a horror movie, to
sympathise with its characters, to feel their angst when the killer or the
evil is coming closer and we can see everything coming etc. So we wanted to
create this once in a lifetime experience of seeing how it feels to watch
this horror movie from 'the other side', and actually not just watch it,
but control it, play it.
Plus, we didn't just want to create a game that is all about the killing. We
just would have ended up with a FPS. We wanted to create clever and smart
puzzles, to make the player rather orchestrate fatal accidents than stupidly
killing people. With these basic ideas, and our passion for the classics of
the horror movie genre, such as The Omen, The Exorcist, The Shining and all
these great mystery horror productions from the 60s, 70s and 80s, we pretty
soon found the perfect character for this role: Lucius, the son of the
devil, an innocent 6-year-old boy, possessed by the pure evil - and if you
look at him for too long, you can literally see the pure evil in his eyes.
Whereas, Lucius isn't evil by birth - the devil starts taking control of him
right in the night to his sixth birthday. So you find yourself controlling a
character that needs to find his way into his evil role, just as the player
has to.
Horror News Network: What types of powers does Lucius have?
Johannes Aikio: The devil grants him a couple of supernatural powers he needs to explore,
train and develop throughout the game - remember, Lucius is a 6-year old boy
who doesn't know anything about his powers until the devil tells him about
them. His supernatural powers include, for example, Telekinesis - the power
to move objects just with the power of Lucius' thoughts -, mind control -
the power to make people do certain things they originally wouldn't want to
do - and mind erase - the power to make people forget about certain
situations.
Horror News Network: What can we expect in terms of blood and guts from this game?
Well, some of the fatal accidents Lucius is orchestrating throughout the
game will make us see some blood spilling. There is this huge bone saw, for
example. And this lawnmower. And much more... On the other hand, Lucius is a
3D horror adventure game, not a chainsaw massacre, so not everything is
designed to make your screen sink in blood.
Horror News Network: What is the replay value like? Can you kill people in different ways each
time?
Lucius is, as all adventures are, a somehow plot based game, because there
is a storyline that all characters are following. It's an interactive story
experience, it's about the atmosphere, the characters and the story itself.
Since Lucius isn't a professional killer, but rather a possessed boy, he
isn't just running around and stabbing everyone he's seeing. He is
fulfilling the devil's orders. Still, there's so much to see and explore in
the game, so that there is a high level of replay value.
Horror News Network: Can you talk about the different levels in the game?
Johannes Aikio: The levels are the missions, the devil's orders. Every single order
represents a new mission.
Horror News Network: Is this game strictly for the PC, or can we expect to see it on consoles as
well?
Johannes Aikio: At the moment, Lucius is a PC only game.
Horror News Network: Any DLC planned for Lucius?
Johannes Aikio: It's always hard to add additional content to adventure games, since they
represent a story that needs to be self-contained to work. So: No, there
aren't plans for DLC at this stage.
Horror News Network: Do you think that Lucius 2 is forseeable?
Johannes Aikio: Well, let's finish off the first game and see how the players like it!
Horror News Network: Where can we find out more information about Lucius?
Johannes Aikio: For example on our publisher's Facebook page facebook.com/LaceMambaGlobal,
on Lucius' Facebook page facebook.com/LuciusTheGame, by following
@LaceMambaGlobal on Twitter or on the games dedicated website
lucius.shivergames.com. And, of course, in all gaming magazines print and
online.
Horror News Network: In closing, what would you like to say about Lucius?
Johannes Aikio: Lucius is a very unique gaming experience dedicated to all you horror movie
and horror gaming fans!
