In "Scream In The Dark," you must escape the clutches of a mysterious serial killer by making the right choices at the right time.
We spoke with the Editorial Director of Little Worlds Studios, David Chomard, about the Scream in the Dark game.
The Big Bad Wolf: What movies influenced the making of this game?
David Chomard: At our studio, we really love the horror movies in general. We wanted to make a ‘teenage horror movies’ like Friday the 13th, Halloween, Scream, etc. When you watch the teenagers in these movies, they always act so silly, and you can’t but think : ‘she should go there’ or ‘she should do this’. So it was the idea of our game: let’s see if you would do better than them if you were in the same situation!
The Big Bad Wolf:
Lets talk about the production of the game. How long did it take from start to finish?
David Chomard:
The original plan was to make it on DVD. We wrote the game and shot the video in 2004, a long time ago. We wanted to make an interactive DVD game on DVD, using the DVD remote control as a game pad. But no distributor was interested in the project. So, it remained in our basket for years, until the launch of iPhone. Thanks to their publishing system, we could release it directly, without a publisher. We did some graphics and interactivity improvements for the iPhone version. So, overall, it took 5 years to make it!
The Big Bad Wolf:
Who are the actors that were involved in making episode 1?
David Chomard:
Well, I don't know if I can say it, but as we had no budget, we asked friends to be the actors. And now they work in our studio as Producer and Artists!
The Big Bad Wolf:
About the game itself, who is the main character that the player controls in episode 1?
David Chomard:
The main character is a girl chased by a psycho. She finds this isolated house, and hides in it. We don’t really explain who she is, where, when or why this happens. We go straight to the action part.
The Big Bad Wolf: Does your player use a weapon to fend off the serial killer?
David Chomard:
Yes, she uses an improvised weapon in the game, but I let the player discover it.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who is the serial killer in this episode and what does he look like?
David Chomard: In this episode, you don’t get to see much of the killer. You can notice that he has a deformed face, that he hides under a hood. He also limps and needs a cane to walk. He hides a sword inside his cane. Except that, we don’t know his motivations, except that he wants to kill the girl. Again, we wanted to focus on action, and didn’t want to slow down the game pace by explaining the background story.
The Big Bad Wolf: What is the serial killers weapon of choice?
David Chomard: The serial killer uses a sword hidden inside his cane.
The Big Bad Wolf: What can we expect in terms of blood and guts?
David Chomard: Well, if you don't make the right choices, or if you are too slow to make a decision, you will see a lot of YOUR blood! We couldn't show real stabbing or killing, because we didn't have the budget for FX and the girl could be killed in a dozen of different places and situations. So, we just show spatter of blood, but if the Episode 1 is successful, we will have more budget for FX for Episode 2.
The Big Bad Wolf: What other features does this game have?
David Chomard: Well, it is really the first interactive movie that ask you to make decisions in real time. Usually, in other interactive movies, the movie pauses, and you have 2 or 3 choices displayed on screen. Once you make a decision, the movie restarts. In our movie, the choices are displayed during the live action, in real time, so you really feel the pressure : no time for thinking, just like in real situation. That is really the key feature of our game.
Another cool feature is that we let the player choose the next serial killer for Episode 2. Once, you finish the game, you have the choice between 3 killers, and you can vote in the iTune page of the game, or with our Facebook poll. It is also very new for a series or a game, I think, that we let the user decide what they want for the next episodes. That’s part of the interactivity.
The Big Bad Wolf:
How many episodes of Scream in the Dark do you have planned?
David Chomard:
We will continue as long as the series is successful! There are plenty of serial killers and girls to be chased to have hundreds of episodes!
The Big Bad Wolf: When is episode 2 planned to be released?
David Chomard: Well, it really depends on the success of Episode 1. We need to make some money with Episode 1 to fund the production of Episode 2. So, right now, it could be weeks or months. The more you buy Episode 1, the faster we will release Episode 2!
The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about Scream in the Dark?
David Chomard: We have an official web site : www.scream-in-the-dark.com where we put news and information. You can also see the evolution of the votes to see who is going to be the next serial killer in Episode 2.
The
Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about Scream in the Dark?
David Chomard:
Well, we put a lot of passion and hopes in this game. We are really happy that it is finally available for everybody to experience it. I really think we have a unique gameplay that will please all the horror movie fans, like us. We sell it very cheap ($0.99), so if you like horror movies and games, I am sure you will enjoy Scream in the Dark!
